- Check water chemistry weekly and adjust where necessary (particularly, pH) and clean skimmer basket filters weekly.
- Use a beneficial bacteria per bottle instructions plus use enzymes to bolster the bacteria. (These bacteria then out-compete algae cells for nutrients.)
- Measure phosphate in the pond with an Aquafast II spectrophotometer by Orion Instruments. (PO4 Test dip strips are also available.) When PO4 gets above 0.25 PPM, we add PHOSCLEAR® according to label directions. (We find our pond requires a PHOSCLEAR® dose every 2 to 6 weeks.)

Our Phosclear® Pond
Our pond is a 12’ X 22’ oval and 3 feet deep in the center with 20” plant shelves along the one side. There is a 4 ½ foot waterfall with an upper pond containing about 200 gallons. It was built in 2003 by Kane Brothers Water Gardens and has a 20 mil rubber liner.
Total water volume is roughly 4000 gallons.
We have two skimmer baskets and a bottom drain. One skimmer has a circulating pump that feeds back to the upper pond and waterfall.The other skimmer and the bottom drain feed directly to the main pump (a Performance Pro Artesian) and then into the bio filter which then empties into the upper pond and waterfall.
How do we keep our pond so clean and clear?
There is a small amount of string algae on the rocks in the pond and this serves to further filter and clarify the water (plus giving the Koi fish something green to eat!)
Our pond is sparkling clear and the fish are healthy, happy and growing fast!
(Note: The waterfall is turned off in order to show the water clarity. )
